2017 has been a wonderful year of album releases. Each month saw much anticipated records coming to our ears. Below is a list of our writers’ favourite records of the year, each having special and unique qualities which have enabled them to become fan favourites since their inception.

Interplanetary Class Classics – The Moonlandingz

The Moonlandingz’ debut has taken the year, and quite possibly the planet, by storm. Its fictional musings clash well with a space-like sound like no other. The collaboration is part Fat White Family, part Eccentronic Research Council and features the likes of Yoko Ono and Slow Club’s Rebecca Taylor.

Tracks such as “Vessels” and “Black Hanz” have become cult classics whilst “Sweet Saturn Mine” and “Glory Hole” provoke intrigue. It is in the live setting where the the album truly comes into a league of its own.

The world needs more of The Moonlandingz, their recent Sheffield outing may well have been their last for a while. However, the album’s legacy will surely live on for a while, it truly is a work of art which can only exist in an otherworldly setting.

Swansea To Hornsey – Trampolene

Trampolene’s debut album ‘Swansea To Hornsey’ was perhaps our most anticipated new album of the year It is a beautiful mix of elegantly chaotic life anthems and beautiful lyricism in the slower, more harmonic tracks. Ultimately, this band are destined for great things!

The inclusion of genius poetry is notable, Jack Jones’ lyrically ability is second to none. The most obvious, open and raw example of this comes in cult classic “Ketamine.” Tracks such as “Imagine Something Yesterday” and “Dreams So Rich, Life So Poor” create hope and positivity through the most bleak of situations, something which is ever present in all the great rock and roll tunes.

You HAVE to listen to this album, quite frankly its sound is infectious. With more touring activity planned for 2018 it is clear that NOTHING is stopping Trampolene from going all the way!

Love In The 4th Dimension – The Big Moon

The Big Moon’s debut is very much spot on, arguably THE most faultless album of the year. Released via Fiction Records, its strong reception by fans and media alike has seen it become somewhat of a modern classic in itself following a well documented Mercury Award nomination.

Musical it vary’s, it mixes different sounds and pace to create something impressive. Tracks such as “Cupid” and “Sucker” may have gained most radio play, though each song is strong in its own right. Our personal favourites include “Pull The Other One” and “Silent Move Susie.”

English Tapas – Sleaford Mods

Sleaford Mods will forever be relevant, gone are the days of their early releases and instead they now have a considerably large platform to spread their post punk message from. English Tapas can in many ways be deliberately polarising, though in truth it offers not an alternative opinion but a commentary of current affairs for the majority.

“Moptop” and “B.H.S” have obvious, over exaggerated political relevance. However, it is very much musically impressive. “Just Like We Do” and “Army Nights” both come across in an uplifting manner. Their live sets are notorious and special, Sleaford Mods are well on their way to becoming something of collective importance.

Apocalipstick – Cherry Glazerr

Clementine Creevy has a voice worth dying for, Cherry Glazerr’s impressive sound channels post punk sounds through huge riffs and DIY lyricism. “Told You I’d Be With The Guys” stands out as being of the the most impressive songs of the year, it is catchy and screams for female solidarity.

“Sip O’ Poison” and “Trash People” suit the live setting where their sound transforms crowds into a beautifully chaotic frenzy, we caught them at Dot to Dot Festival back in May and trust us, they were by far THE standout band of the day!

The Wholls – The Wholls

The Wholls’ sound is just massive! Think an impressive collective between Jamie T, Blossoms and The Prodigy, quite frankly they have a sound worth dying for. Their self titled debut album is impressive, a sure sign of things to come!

Standout tracks include the anthemic “Take Jimi” which mesmerised fans across the country during this summer’s festival season where the Bedford band were part of This Feeling’s Jack Rocks 7 concept. “X21” and “Roll Out” are both equally as massive, their live sound is just as impressive as The Wholls’ mesmerising debut album.

24/7 Rockstar Shit – The Cribs

The Jarman brothers are each musical enigmas, they have never lost touch with their sound and it shows! ’24/7 Rockstar Shit’ displays all the hallmarks of their now iconic sound though still includes enough differentiation to once more cement their latest album in the realms of ultimate consistency

“Year Of Hate” was first dropped as a limited, surprise vinyl drop via independent record stores in true Cribs fashion. They are a HUGE iconic band but still remain true to their DIY roots. “Rainbow Ridge” and “Broken Arrow” complete the highlights for this one, though in truth the whole album combines to become one of the most pleasurable listening experiences of the year.

Who Built The Moon – Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds

Possibly the largest name on the list, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds’ latest album ‘Who Built The Moon?’ is nothing short of a masterpiece. We are in awe of the musical change in direction, in many ways he is no longer sporting the bland, unimpressive stadium dad rock which dominated later Oasis albums.

Instead, songs such as “It’s A Beautiful World,” “The Man Who Built The Moon” and “Fort Knox” infuse positivity and are infectious. In many ways this is a beautiful album!

Visions Of A Life – Wolf Alice

For most bands, the all important second album is a time of great difficulty. However, Wolf Alice’s ‘Visions Of A Life’ is nothing short of impressive and explores somewhat of a darker sound to their original debut.

Opening with “Heavenward,” the album cleverly explores a variety of themes through sounds both loud, heavy and soft. “Beautifully Unconventional” is by far the most catchy, though tracks such as “Don’t Delete The Kisses” introduce a relevant, meaningful side to an album which will live long in the memory. Wolf Alice are only going to keep getting better!

Scum – Ratboy

Ratboy hold true to their DIY production style with debut album ‘Scum’ whilst elevating it into the larger studio. Don’t believe reputation, the album should be used as a form of ultimate judgement.

With interludes providing somewhat of a fun-filled, comedic effect, the true intrigue comes within sound and lyric. “Revolution” sums up the mood of an entire generation whilst the already classic “Sign On” is one of the album’s true high points.

Ratboy are sometimes infamous and pictured in a confused manner on social media however, it should be there music which does the talking. Jordan Cardy and co have produced and intriguingly infectious album in ‘Scum.’

Wheels To Idyll – John Hassall & The April Rainers

‘Wheels To Idyll’ is very much a complete album, it collates impressively from start to finish. The quieter, more relaxed sound within it is musically impressive and brings a calm aura most relatable to the sound of the late 60s.

“Sun In The Afternoon” is a beautiful opener whilst “Intercity 125” is a meaningful journey back to youthful times. The entire album is very much dreamy, this is best seen in “Whether Girl” and “Given Time.” The album is entirely impressive, one to be taken on any kind of journey!

Brutalism – Idles

Idles’ rise in 2017 has been nothing short of phenomenal, the BBC Radio 6 favourites are very much poised to become one of the most important post punk outfits of the decade. Their debut, self titled album imposes all the hallmarks of their relentless quest for musical supremacy.

“Well Done” and “Mother” are both hard hitting, in your face anthems which create a riotous response from the listener. They are also politically relevant, the Bristol based band’s sound constantly evokes different layers and is best suited to the louder volume echelons. Ultimately, this record will remain long in the memory of listeners, it no wonder they are developing such an ever growing following.

As You Were – Liam Gallagher

THE biggest comeback album of the year! Liam Gallagher has completely owned 2017 with his no.1 selling debut solo album ‘As You Were’ and a historic run of arena gigs to complete the year. The album is impressive albeit expected. Tracks such as “Wall Of Glass” and “You Better Run” boast fairly obvious Oasis comparisons.

However, tracks such as “Universal Gleam” and “I’ve All I Need” bring out only the best side of the younger Gallagher’s voice. It may be fairly similar to the obvious, arena-like nature of Oasis and Beady Eye’s sound however, it by far eclipses everything the iconic front man has released in many decades.

2017: Best Tracks

First published December 2017. Now part of ‘The Best Of Eudaemonia.’ More info via the ABOUT page.

2017 has been one of THE greatest years for new music, many singles and tracks have soundtracked the year from the outset. It is clear that each of these tracks will grow into something special, with some potentially becoming life changing anthems. Below are some of our favourite songs of the year:

The Blinders – Brave New World

Quite possibly the most impactful release this year, “Brave New World” does everything to epitomise the current state of the planet in which we live upon. It is atmospheric and otherworldly, best suited to the live setting.

The Blinders have already seen an explosion in support throughout 2017, their early 2018 tour is a sign of things to come. They are a band with so much talent and political insight, their sound is effortless and their lyrics become an at times era defining commentary for the masses.

Bang Bang Romeo – Natural Born Astronaut

No song brings as much positivity as “Natural Born Astronaut,” it fills us with both hope and excitement. Lyrically on point and vocally sensational there is nothing to not like about this song.

Bang Bang Romeo have been onto something quite special this year having performed at festivals across the country alongside the historic ‘This Feeling Alive Tour’ with bands such as The Shimmer Band and BlackWaters. Ultimately, ‘Natural Born Astronaut” is already a classic in our eyes.

Sheafs – This Is Not A Protest

One of the most uplifting, anthemic songs in a while, Sheafs’ latest single is a force to be reckoned with. Catchy guitar riffs dominate with stellar chorus’ and lyricism throughout. This is amazing in the life setting, circle pits and crowd surfing galore prove that Sheafs are one of the most intriguing live bands out there right now.

Calva Louise – Getting Closer

Calva Louise are one of London’s most impressive, uplifting bands at the minute. Their single “Getting Closer” has been ferocious and gained numerous lines of support in the process. It mixes genius guitar riffs with catchy lyricism to create a fine mix of heavy and upbeat sound.

Their punky charm is unmissable, what a year 2018 will be for Calva Louise!

Tom Grennan – Found What I’ve Been Looking For

Tom Grennan has risen through the industry this year, 2018 will be eagerly anticipated for it shall see the release of his debut album. The Bedford born singer is insanely likeable and “Found What I’ve Been Looking For” displays all the hallmarks of his incredible ability.

It clearly hasn’t been a bad year for someone who only drunkenly discovered their singing ability during a pub singalong!

Self Esteem – Your Wife

Produced by Django Django’s Dave Mclean, Slow Club’s Rebecca Lucy Taylor’s Self Esteem is something quite intriguing. Lead single “Your Wife” questions the freedom of the male dominated world. Lyrically it is second to none, Taylor’s abilities are nothing short of mesmerising.

Yak – All I Need Is Some Sunshine In My Life

Produced by Kevin Parker, “All I Need Is Some Sunshine In My Life” represents a successful return in preparation for their all important second album, it is nothing short of mesmerising. Opening with a confident yet tranquil mix of effects and distortion, the track mixes all the best elements of the London based band.

It rapidly converts to mass energy and explosion. This is something in which the band are effortlessly good at, it is rare to see a band as raw and expressive as Yak are.

Babe Punch – Control

BABEPUNCH are arguably the most active, well loved band in Nottingham’s ever growing music scene right now. “Control” has a chorus worth dying for and is incredibly well produced.

They are one of the country’s most impressive upcoming bands, their debut single is second to none and rightly features in such an end of year list!

Insecure Men – Teenage Toy

Insecure Men’s second single is no doubt their most impressive. Formed by Saul of Fat White Family fame alongside Ben Romans-Hopcraft and Nathan Saoudi, the band present a new direction of musical diversity and meaning.

Its at times dark lyricism is juxtaposed with its upbeat, catchy sound. The band are on tour next year, you must catch them live!

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds – Holy Mountain

One of the biggest names on the list, though such a change in musical direction merits this. Produced by David Holmes and taken from no.1 selling album ‘Who Built The Moon?’, “Holy Mountain is perhaps the stand out track on the whole album.

It is similar yet so different to anything he has ever done in the past. Strong chorus and lyricism is no doubt present, though the inclusion of brass sections, different vocal melodies and ever changing riffs gives it all the elements of a 60s bop mixed with an 80s dance classic.

Trampolene – Storm Heaven

Taken from their debut album ‘Swansea To Hornsey,’ “Storm Heaven” is one of the most impressive, atmospheric anthems we’ve heard for a while. It mixes all of the best aspects of Trampolene’s sound and in many ways is one of the remarkable tracks they’ve ever released.

Trampolene are currently on tour with Liam Gallagher and owning their sets in massive live arenas. If anyone deserves it it’s them!

BlackWaters – Let The Good Times Roll

BlackWaters have been one of the years stand out artists, their punky melodies and youthful lyricism is second to none. “Let The Good Times Roll” is catchy and listenable, you’ll never forget it from first listen onwards. The band have been ever active throughout the year at festivals and beyond, their sets during ‘This Feeling’s Alive Tour’ were both intense and intriguing.

Once again, 2018 is gonna be a crackin year for these boys!

Sisteray – Queen’s English

We fell in love with Sisteray from the outset, their politically relevant sound is exciting and refreshing.

It is lyrically where the song comes into a league of its own, just about calling out pretty much everyone in modern politics and establishment. In theory, there are more sends in “Queens English” than in the most popular of modern rap albums, though unlike opposite contemporaries Sisteray are creating a social commentary like no other.

White Room – Stole The I.V.

White Room recently released double EP ‘Eight’ to massive critical acclaim. “Stole The I.V.” is one of THE stand out tracks, its chorus is unreal and entirely memorable. It is no surprise that they are festival favourites, in many ways the single is THE perfect festival sing along.

Think a modern version of Pulp’s Common People with some of the strongest guitar based sounds we’ve heard in a while.

Brown Lion Zoo – Get Up

Brown Lion Zoo are Nottingham’s most impressive new band, BBC Radio Introducing have already had this one all over the airwaves in the last few months or so. “Get Up” is the perfect starting point for the new listener.

It is energetic and well suited to the live setting, of which their local shows are becoming all the more famous. With a rapid rise expected, 2018 will be a surreal year for Brown Lion Zoo!

WOWH – Early Hours

WOWH are sensational, their effortless musical ability is enabling them an ever growing fan base and strong recommendations from press alike.

The duo made up of Nick Harrison and Toby Couling mix multi instrumentalist talents with catchy, relevant lyricism to create the perfect funk-pop track, “Early Hours” is THE perfect example of this.

Paves – Baby

Described by Radio X as the perfect “summer anthem,” Paves’ latest single “Baby” is arguably their best yet. Infectious guitar riffs mix with heavenly lyricism to create somewhat of an emerging stadium anthem.

It has wowed fans across the country in small venues and festival alike and is no doubt one of the strongest new rock and roll songs out there right now!

The Shimmer Band – Jacknife And The Death Call

The Bristol formed band have an obvious psychedelic sound, a perfect mixture of effects and guitar which makes them incredibly suited to the live setting.

“Jacknife And The Death Call” incorporates all of this, its heavy verse and chorus wouldn’t seem out of place in the smallest of venues nor the largest of stadiums.

Live Review: Liam Gallagher

First published December 2017. Now part of ‘The Best Of Eudaemonia.’ More info via the ABOUT page.

Date: 10/12/2017

Venue: Motorpoint Arena, Nottingham

Liam Gallagher’s arena return has already been nothing short of spectacular. His Nottingham return was unlike no other, a true throwback to the early days of his fast evolving, long ranging career.

2017 has already seen the now solo-star return to a rightful number 1 spot in the chart whilst also maintaining his legendary reputation. Performances at Glastonbury and Reading proved that his new sound is at home in only the largest of settings whilst also proving that his vocal abilities are at a two decade high. Ultimately, things are looking good for the former Oasis frontman.

Arriving on stage to “Fuckin In The Bushes” it was clear from the outset that the Nottingham crowd would be like no other, beers launching around the venue and fans being raised to shoulders was the norm. The opening duo of “Rock ’n’ Roll Star” and “Morning Glory” set the scene, it is clear that they are both two of the greatest live rock and roll tracks to ever exist.

The night was opened by Trampolene, arguably one of the best new bands to come out of Britain’s ever growing underground music scene this year. Their infectious mixture of bass and treble delighted the Nottingham crowd. It is clear their sound is suited to the big arenas, if anyone deserves to be on this stage it is them! Ratboy were next up, their youthful sound may not have been suited to the parka cladded, middle aged men who spanned the majority of the arena though it is clear that their talent is impeccable, they create effortless joy wherever they go.

New songs taken from no.1 album ‘As You Were’ also stood their ground and did not seem at all out of place amongst a setlist featuring numerous classics. Highlights include “Come Back To Me” and “Wall Of Glass,” the latter being one of the true sounds of summer 2017. “For What It’s Worth” also manages to encapsulate a meaningful type of atmosphere, already it is a fan favourite and a memorable sing along.

“Rockin Chair” has been given its first outing in decades during Gallagher’s latest arena tour which spans the breadth of the country, from London and Plymouth to Manchester and Glasgow. His relevance has never been in question, in many ways this is a testimony to not only his likability but the long lasting legacy of Oasis.

“Some Might Say” and “Supersonic” were expectedly triumphant, though surprise inclusions of the night such as “Universal Gleam” and “Bold” once again do well to match their Oasis predecessors. The former is one of the most delightful tracks from the new album, it brings out the best in Gallagher’s voice.

2018 is already looking intense for the Manchester legend, headline shows at Old Trafford Cricket Ground, TRNSMT Festival and London’s Finsbury Park bring him back to the festival-type gigs in which his voice is best suited to. With most tickets already sold out, it is clear that his newfound solo fame is showing no signs of slowing down.

Self stated as one of the last remaining ‘true rock and roll’ stars, it is hard to argue with Liam Gallagher’s credentials. His Nottingham return was sensational and memorable, one of THE biggest nights the city will have seen in 2017 and beyond!

Review: Trampolene – Swansea to Hornsey

First published November 2017. Now part of ‘The Best Of Eudaemonia.’ More info via the ABOUT page.

Name: ’Swansea to Hornsey’

Artist: Trampolene

Rating: ★★★★★

Such impactful debut releases are a rarity, Trampolene’s debut album ‘Swansea to Hornsey’ is meaningful, raw and unique. With a loving, united fan base behind them and the most beautiful of personalities to match, we cannot recommend listening to this album enough!

The album opens with “Artwork Of Youth,” one of lead singer Jack Jones’ poetical masterpieces… they’ll be on the A Level syllabus in not time, trust us! “Imagine Something Yesterday” is as impressive as its title, an articulate triad of Lennon songs. It is at a similar level lyrically, Jones has the ability to create hope and positivity from the darkest of situations. With an intro which wouldn’t sound out of place on a Cure song, the track is mesmerising and catchy – an intricate mix of sound and lyric in which Trampolene are best known for.

Formed upon an ethic of musical companionship, Trampolene are known for fan involvement. In fact, it is refreshing to see a band as engrossed and well loved as they are by their fans. Jack, Wayne and Rob have a clear, friendly persona both on stage and off which makes them entirely loved. Their live show has developed over the years, whilst their abilities are second to none it is the unexpected nature of their set which makes Trampolene all the more interesting. From stage jumps to climbing up vast holdings, Jones’ ever growing acrobatic abilities are becoming notorious.

However, their album proves that it is their music which does the talking. Old anthems including “Alcohol Kiss” and “Dreams So Rich, Life So Poor” have been reworked and included. It is important for the Swansea trio to inherit and brag about their past rather than ignore it much like others do when it comes to a debut. From the outset their tunes have been something of an enigma which provides reasoning for their strong reception in the live setting.

Named after the Julian Cope song, Trampolene first formed in Swansea though relocated to London in hopes of creating a Warholian-esque creative space like no other. Their growth throughout the years has been phenomenal, constantly growing throughout the country and beyond. Their journey’s into Europe are becoming all the more regular following recent adventures into France and Belgium.

It is their blending of heavy rock and spoken word which makes the Swansea outfit so unique. In fact, Trampolene are in many ways the perfect rock band, the album proves that they have a unique combination of varying styles which come together to form something quite otherworldly. “The Gangway” is the most anthemic of the lot! A dreamy, acoustic intro mixes well with raw, catchy lyricism to once more create a well loved sing along. It is followed by “Ketamine,” the poem in which Jones is most known for. Beyond its obvious reference to the party drug, “Ketamine” is somewhat of a metaphor for life and is very much like John Cooper Clarke in its delivery.

Trampolene’s touring commitments have been relentless, you do get the feeling that the trio enjoy playing together and have far more of a companionship that their contemporaries. This year saw them take part in the Jack Rocks 7 programme alongside mass small venue shows under the guise of the impressive ‘This Feeling’ banner. Their performances at Reading Festival and Brighton’s Great Escape were by far notable, though it often feels like there’s a bit of magic about each and every one of their shows.

Following the formation of a talented and likely friendship, lead singer Jack Jones has become a fully fledge member of Peter Doherty’s band, ‘The Puta Madres.’ No stranger to also opening Doherty solo sets, Jones spreads his time evenly between the two projects. As an already iconic talent in his own right, Jones is an integral part of the Puta Madres mixing his guitar playing with Doherty’s solo sounds. Having already penned original songs together in the past, it will be interesting to see how their friendship and collaboration develops as time grows older.

This month and beyond sees the Welsh trio return to various cities once more in celebration of their debut release, already Bristol and Brighton are close to a sell out, with Cardiff, Liverpool and Leeds sure to follow. Quite importantly, they also head on their biggest shows to date in support of Liam Gallagher’s December Arena tour. Quite frankly, these are the venues their sound is best suited to, we already cant wait to see what they have planned for such a special run of dates including Nottingham and more historically Manchester’s Arena.

With such a mix of old and unheard releases on their 14 track album, the newer tracks do well to document the positioning of the band at this point. “Storm Heaven” is a rock n roll tune for the ages, mixing obvious guitar riffs and echoey treble. “Beautiful Pain” and “Blue Balls And A Broken Heart” explore the softer sound of the band, lyrically they are second to none of effortless.

‘Swansea To Hornsey’ is perhaps one of the most impressive debut albums of the year, we can’t begin to express our love for it. With such a big run of dates coming up, we can only hope that fans new and old take to them in awe. Trampolene have every right to be one of the UK’s biggest rock bands!

Interview: Bang Bang Romeo

First published October 2017. Now part of ‘The Best Of Eudaemonia.’ More info via the ABOUT page.

This Feeling’s ‘Alive’ tour has been nothing short of biblical, a turning point which proves that an underground scene is soon to shatter the glass ceiling. It is only a matter of time!

We caught up with Bang Bang Romeo before their set at Nottingham’s Glee Club. The band have gone from strength to strength ever since we first caught them as innocent, albeit slightly drunk 18 year olds on our first night out at the Amersham Arms almost two years ago. They are destined to huge stages and with media support and fan base ever growing we can only imagine such an impressive rise to the top is nothing short of inevitable.

Eudaemonia: We first saw you a few years back at the Amersham Arms in South East London, what has the journey been like to get from there to this point now?

Anastasia: We have a new management team and have signed to Solo? Music Agency so the opportunity is flying and we’ve taken them by both hands and taken things on board. The music as well is developing especially whilst we have been recording our debut album. Our sound is exactly where we want it to be now which puts more confidence in us confidence for live shows. Our fan base has been growing which feels really good, people are starting to click on a dig it like we are.

Ross: From that Amersham Arms gig we’ve just kept digging haven’t we, its been really hard graft.

Richard: It was one of the first This Feeling gigs and we got offered Isle Of Weight festival off it. It feels mad that it was two or three years ago.

Ross: We ended up with Solo Agency who run the festival after than and they got us on the Big Top this year.

Anastasia: To be fair we haven’t had a break since that point, honestly we’ve been non stop.

Eudaemonia: You guys honestly feel like one of the most committed live bands going, will you ever feel like you’ll get to a point where you would want to take a few months out to recover?

Ross: Yeah probably on Sunday after the ‘Alive’ tour finishes!

Anastasia: We have mates in bands who say they’ll take time out to be in the studio though we’ve been touring whilst recording our debut album. It has been so hands on but we’ve had so much exciting news that we don’t think we’ll be stopping for a while. Its a good kind of busy because its a good kind of progression, as long as the slope is going upwards then were happy to not rest.

Richard: These days as well you cant let any side of the band get forgotten about. We’re recording, playing live and doing social media at the same time to keep the hype. You cant build a buzz whilst you’re quiet.

Anastasia: Even though we have management id say we are a very DIY band too. All our posters and artwork are by Richard, it is never anyone other than us on social media. Planning tours and all that kind of stuff comes into it too, we’re very much behind the scenes. We may be on stage for half an hour a night but there are twenty-three other hours in the day.

Ross: Rich was in ‘Baby Driver’ in the middle of all this too!

Eudaemonia: Hearing “Invitation” and “Johannesburg” were big moments, would you say your sound has developed since then? Especially considering the release of Natural Born Astronaut

Anastasia: Yeah, I think we’ve always have “Natural Born Astronaut”-esque style in our sound but our new production team and producers have really given us the opportunity to put our dreams onto record and give us the opportunity to show what we’ve been dreaming of.

Eudaemonia: It all seems really professional doesnt it?

Anastasia: Yeah, even down to the equipment, the mic’s, amps and recording systems. Its all made in house by John… Everything really is within the Bang Bang Romeo bubble!

Eudaemonia: What was it like taking Natural Born Astronaut from an idea to the massive release which it seems to be growing into now?

Ross: it came from an acoustic idea to where it is now which has been amazing.

Anastasia: Ross came to us with it acoustically, you can hear his little girl in the background and we were all just like: “Ross… Where the fuck does this stuff come from?” It developed and we were able to build on it and put it down. It has been really well received and we keep getting good news about it especially on the radio. It has been added to playlists on Radio X and has shown a different side to us as a band too. We’re not all dark and angry and it has shown a lighter side to us.

Eudaemonia: What can we expect from the Bang Bang Romeo live show?

Anastasia: We’ve started smoking human bones on stage much like Marilyn Manson. Nah we don’t do that just for the record! It’s all emotional, passionate theatre. It’s not just the music, we want people to go away with a song in their head. Its probably more intense and engaging with a few surprises thrown in there too alongside our new light show.

Eudaemonia: How has the This Feeling ‘Alive’ Tour been like so far? It feels bigger and really special to be part of…

Anastasia: It has been great and to be on the first one has been really special. We’ve got a proper bromance going on with BlackWaters now. Every band have been at a high level every night which has been rare, we are blown away by the two other bands every night. For us it has been great because we get to gig and see them each night. Playing venues we haven’t ever played before to a crowd who we didn’t even know knew the words to each song has been so special. It has been good and we’ve been able to expand as a band.

Eudaemonia: Its cool to see bands who are at the top of their game and constantly improving, it feels like something which will be talked about as a turning point in years to come right?

Richard: In the first meeting with Mikey Jonns he mentioned that grime has made a scene where everybody supports each other which is ultimately why the genre is at the top of the charts. Whilst that is something which he has been doing in the underground for a long time, this tour is about getting our music right up there in bigger venues and pushing it into peoples faces.

Eudaemonia: Do you reckon our kind of music will be trapped in the underground for much longer?

Anastasia: There’s only so long until that glass ceiling will be shattered. The industry will have to give way at some point, it isn’t going to have a choice!

Eudaemonia: What can we expect from Bang Bang Romeo in the coming 6 months?

Anastasia: There’s new and exciting things happening behind the scenes. We have a few finishing touches to add to the album and we think it’ll come out next year. There’ll definitely be another single beforehand though, if not two. We also have the video for “Natural Born Astronaut” coming out in the next couple of weeks too which stars Ross’ little boy Noah who is a really cool little actor!

Finally, where would you like to see the band in 5 years time?

Ross: Probably in space really!

Anastasia: Either inner earth or space… I think we’d love to gig Albert Hall five nights in a row before or Glastonbury. We want to save that for the first time the band play there.

Richard: We’d love to have about two albums out by then too.

Eudaemonia Live

First published October 2017. Now part of ‘The Best Of Eudaemonia.’ More info via the ABOUT page.

From its inception Eudaemonia has had an aim of bringing upcoming new bands and music into limelight. The necessity for a live gig has always been in the forefront of our minds. With this comes Eudaemonia Live, Nottingham’s newest celebration of some of the best new bands the city and beyond has to offer!

Here’s an insight into Sisteray, Brown Lion Zoo and Lighthouse who will play Eudaemonia Live #1 at Nottingham’s Maze on 12.10.2017:

Sisteray:

We cannot hide our love for these boys, they have taken London by storm and already have a reputation like no other. Having just launched their own club night in Paris, Sisteray come to Nottingham on the top of their game. Their live set is mesmerising as a result of their raw energy and infectious sound.

Songs such as “Queen’s English” and “White Knuckle Joy Ride” taken from latest EP release ’15 Minutes’ are both exceptional. They mix punk-like guitar chords with relevant lyricism to create confident, energetic tracks which are best suited to the live setting. Quite frankly, Sisteray have one of the most impressive live sets going, they’ve wowed festival crowds across the country this year already, Nottingham is in for one hell of a treat!

Brown Lion Zoo:

Formed locally at university, Brown Lion Zoo have already made massive waves into the local music scene. Their impressive outings at small venues across town are constantly gaining more and more support, in many ways they are THE most talked about upcoming band in Nottingham right now.

Forget all that though, let their sound do the talking. Their recent EP release ‘Where’s My Sandwich’ is nothing short of impressive. Already it is one of our favourite releases of the year, songs such as “Desire” and “Get Up” are not only well technically produced but are entirely listenable. Brown Lion Zoo are quite possibly one of Nottingham’s best new exports, their potential is limitless.

Lighthouse:

Lighthouse are the epitome of great sounds and huge potential. Their music is infectious and well structured, it won’t be long before they have a reputation across the country starting with their debut Nottingham gig.

Recent double A side release ‘Brown Bottle Flu/Loaded’ is a firm example of their musical abilities. Both catchy and well presented, it is symbolic perhaps of bands such as Palma Violets and The Libertines though with an entirely unique twist. Given the quality of their future release we can only recommend them profusely!

Eudaemonia Live #1 takes place on Thursday 12th October at Nottingham’s Maze. All profits will be donated to Mind, they provide advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem.

This Feeling’s ‘Alive’ tour has been nothing short of biblical, a turning point which proves that an underground scene is soon to shatter the glass ceiling. It is only a matter of time!

We caught up with Tom Newman from The Shimmer Band before their headline set at Nottingham’s Glee Club. The Bristol formed band have been one of our favourites for a while now, their sound is positive and infectious. Their mesmerising talents mean they are destined to the top. Check out our words below:

Eudaemonia: I think there’s only 4 dates left or so now, but how has the This Feeling ‘Alive’ Tour been for you guys?

Tom Newman : It has been been really good man. Leeds, Manchester, Glasgow and Bristol have been the standouts. Particularly Leeds on Monday, that was a really good one.

Eudaemonia: It feels like a coming of age as such for both The Shimmer Band and This Feeling.

Tom Newman : Yeah, it feels like the culmination of a lot of hard work from Mike Johnns and all the people who work for This Feeling, the London show will be a good celebration.

They’ve spent over ten years working at building this brand to promote new music and give young bands the opportunity they wouldn’t normally get. Now it seems to be bubbling up into mainstream consciousness and people are becoming really aware of it now. It is a good source for good new music.

All their nights out are always good fun and a good laugh. If you’re into guitar music then it really is the place to be!

Eudaemonia: What has it been like to play bigger venues on this tour. We last saw you at Camden Assembly and honestly thought the floor was gonna fall through. It must be a bit different?

Tom Newman : It’s a pretty big step, that Camden Assembly gig was one of my favourite gigs we’ve ever done. I was surprised by it because we didn’t know what to expect, we turned up and it sold out with loads of people outside trying to get in. That’s what you want man!

The Electric Ballroom is a big old venue and its gonna be great on Saturday. Our music suits a big stage, as much as I love playing these sweaty little rooms. When theres a big PA our music sounds and travels better.

Eudaemonia: Freedom and Sunkick are huge anthems, has it been a journey since releasing them to where the band is at now?

Tom Newman : We sometimes struggle to fit them in the building! We’ve been gigging since we put out Shoot Me Baby and Freedom last year. We’ve been doing everything and its been good fun.

Eudaemonia: What has the reception for the new single “Ya Ya (Uh Oh)” been like?

Tom Newman: It’s been good, I think its freaked people out but you’ve gotta mix it up and try different things. It’s only a single and its still us playing it. Hopefully itll stand next to the other ones. All of our tunes have a little bit of a weirdness to them, even Sunkick isnt just a straight rock song.

Eudaemonia: Thats what makes you guys so individual. Shimmer Band sets are notorious for high energy and euphoria…

Tom Newman: We just wanna incite as much carnage as possible, get everyone bouncing around and moving. We enjoyed touring with Cabbage as we got to play to a crowd every single night which was good. It depends on the gig, sometimes supporting is really good – such as supporting Stereophonics at Cardiff City’s stadium which felt insane.

We headlined Camden Assembly and that was one of my favourite gigs ever.

Eudaemonia: You’ve played a tonne of festivals this year too, do you enjoy playing those?

Tom Newman: Yeah they’ve grown on me, I was always unsure because you dont get to soundcheck. we have so much going on so like a good soundcheck but we’ve got used to it now. We have a good technician who knows what hes doing.

I really like festivals now, we did TRNSMT and Isle of Wight with The Feeling which was really good. We also did Truck Festival, Id never heard of it but we played the second stage which was huge, there were fucking loads of people there. It was a cool little festival.

Eudaemonia: What three words describe the sound of The Shimmer Band?

Tom Newman: Euphoric, Explsive and Positive.

Eudaemonia: Finally, what can we expect following the end of this tour?

Tom Newman: Its definitely a turning point. After this we will record a whole album, a proper debut. We’re gonna take our time on it, not rush and get it right. once thats ready we’ll go from there. We really want people to dig it!

Focus: Bang Bang Romeo

A band who’ve been firm favourites of ours for a good few years now, Bang Bang Romeo really do mean business. Effortlessly likeable and astronomically talented, 2017 comes as a true breakthrough year for the Doncaster formed band. With an album in the pipeline and an eternity of touring under their belt they are headed for eternal greatness.

Ever since their formation, Bang Bang Romeo have had an unparalleled attitude to touring and releases alike, they have a musical presence like no other. This has been obvious since the start, debut single “Johannesburg” was an immediate indicator of their talents. A mix of Fleetwood Mac, Jefferson Airplane and The Last Shadow Puppets, the 2015 single is melodic, atmospheric and powerful. Immediately, everyone was talking about Bang Bang Romeo.

“Invitation” followed. Its sound is heavier, more dense and at times dark. Best suited to the live setting it has the ability to mesmerise crowds into a state of frenzy. Heavy guitar chords, echoey and effects and a bass line to die for it was at this point their most immersive release to date and caught the eyes of many industry leaders including This Feeling. The latter’s relentless support of the band has played a key role in their rise, in many ways the band and promoter came together in a match made in heaven.

Previous summers have been dedicated to relentless festival outings, calm summer evenings in which their sound is well suited to. In fact, it is such festival appearances which the band are famed for and in which a huge proportion of their ever growing fan base has been formed. This year saw the band make up part of the Jack Rocks 7 programme which saw them headed to world famous events such as TRNSMT (filling in for the infamous T In The Park Festival) Reading and The Great Escape Festival in Brighton. With an ever growing back catalogue you can be sure that the Yorkshire band constantly provide an intriguing, reliable live set.

Formed of Anastasia Walker, Ross Cameron and Richard Gartland, Bang Bang Romeo have limitless potential. Huw Stephens describes them as a ‘Tarantino Soundtrack,’ Gordon Smart proudly promotes them on his Radio X show, it is clear that Bang Bang Romeo have an immense amount of industry support to match their loving fan base. Clearly, there is pressure on them to grow all the way to festival main stages and large venues alike though they have confidence to match such a billing – it’s just a matter of time.

Mid 2017 saw the release of “Chemical” which in many ways is emotive and their closest encounter with the theme of love. Opening with a soft, meaningful opening verse its chorus is the best example of Walker’s impressive vocal ability. She is cool as fuck and has perhaps the best leading voice in underground modern rock music, the perfect front-woman. “Chemical” is as good live as it is in on record, it goes down as one of THE anthems of the summer. We promise you will be blown away by Bang Bang Romeo’s live set!

The rest of 2017 sees the Doncaster band head on tour alongside The Shimmer Band and BlackWaters as part of This Feelings influential alive tour. You won’t find three better bands in fact, we’re sure that you won’t find these bands in such intimate venues again. They are all destined for ‘bigness,’ none more so than Bang Bang Romeo. The tour encapsulates most of the country from Cardiff to Nottingham, Glasgow to Brighton, Manchester to London. Every date will be memorable though our eyes are firmly fixed on Camden’s Electric Ballroom, the largest coming together yet under the ‘This Feeling’ banner.

Latest single “Natural Born Astronaut” is a game changer, in many ways representing their diversity in sound. We first described it as Lady Gaga meets David Bowie on a space bound rocket ship, though in many ways it is better than that (big statement indeed!) Opening with the most dreamy of guitar riffs, it is THE most impactful release of Bang Bang Romeo’s and infuses a state of mesmerisation. It should be the soundtrack to a lifetime let alone a night, “Natural Born Astronaut” is quite possibly THE single of the year, we can’t explain how important this one is gonna be!

Bang Bang Romeo are destined to only greatness, they are on top of their game and only getting stronger. With their ‘This Feeling Alive’ tour rapidly growing closer, further live commitments ever increasing and a debut album in the pipeline, one can only assume that the next 12 months will be the making of the Doncaster band. Quite frankly, Bang Bang Romeo have the potential to make an entire genre their own!

Review: The Cribs – 24/7 Rockstar Shit

First published August 2017. Now part of ‘The Best Of Eudaemonia.’ More info via the ABOUT page.

Name: ’24/7 Rockstar Shit’

Artist: The Cribs

Rating: ★★★★★

The Cribs are timeless, we can’t think of another modern band as consistent as they are. Whilst remaining true to themselves and their fan base, it is clear that this is a band devoid of corporate spiel, mass management and major labels. To put it simply, The Cribs are in a league of their own, as exemplified through seventh album ’24/7 Rock Star Shit.’

Opening with “Give Good Time,” it is clear from the outset that the Wakefield trio explore a different side to their sound once more. Given that this is something they are famous for this comes as no surprise. In fact, each of their records offers something entirely different, a true ode to their insane and unrivalled musical talents. As album openers go the track could truly grow into being a classic.

It was “Year Of Hate” which launched their record campaign earlier in the year, being offered to true fans who were willing to queue at independent record shops from the early hours. Limited to a relatively small pressing, each record is customised and is already seen to be an exclusive collectors item. The track is ‘out there’ and offers on insight into the band’s grunge inspirations. They have never understated their love of bands such as Nirvana and so such a diverse, heavy record should come as no surprise to the listener.

Whilst “In Your Palace” and “Dendrophobia” continue to explore their immersive sound which in many ways resonates well with fans of their debut, self titled album, “What Have You Done For Me?” stands out as one of the strongest, most impressive tracks on the new album. It is melodic and meaningful and in many ways tells the story of their existence. Its meaning can be replicated for all emotions, we are sure that it will be one of the most long lasting of Cribs tracks and grow into being a true fan favourite, a must for any live setlist.

Having released their debut album in 2004, the band have toured and produced extensively. From recruiting Johnny Marr for ‘Ignore The Ignorant’ and producing one of the greatest indie tracks of them all in “Men’s Needs,” they have truly achieved everything. They have critical success and a fan base to match and having achieved the NME Award for an ‘Outstanding Contribution To Music’ they clearly have every right to see themselves as a complete success. However, they remain true to their roots and are arguably the nicest band in music. With ’24/7 Rockstar Shit’ being produced in five days alongside Steve Albini, they dedicate it to all new musicians and bands.

“Rainbow Ridge” was trailed extensively as a single before the album’s release, its video tracks back to the consistent DIY nature of the band. With no press or extensive promo like many of their contemporaries it is all the more impressive that the Wakefield trio are on course for a top 10 chart finish. They constantly grow as a band, even still in the live setting with recent ventures taking them to large festivals and arena shows alongside special celebrations such as last summer’s Millennium Square show in Leeds City centre.

“Partisan” is another which has potential to become a live favourite. However, it is “Broken Arrow” which resonates best and quite frankly is the perfect album closure. Probably the natural successor to fan favourite “Pink Snow,” it in many ways comes as a follow up to the classic taken from ‘For All My Sisters.’ With a dreamey guitar solo, heavenly lyrics and an iconic closure to match, “Broken Arrow” represents The Cribs at their finest!

It is rare to see a band remain true to themselves like The Cribs. They are true rock stars and will never, ever sell out. Whilst changing their sound, each album is as consistent as the other. Quite frankly, The Cribs are national treasures and should be regarded as rock and roll royalty.
